‘Mr K,’ said Boo, into Eddy’s back. They had settled quickly into their old spooning. The warmth of Boo’s skin on his. The little tickling gusts on his back when she spoke. Her arm over his stomach, hand tucked under his waist. He was drifting off.

‘Hmmm.’

‘You hear that?’

‘Huh?’

‘Morepork?’

‘Mmmm.’

‘Is it the same one?’

‘Prob’ly.’

‘Hear that?’

‘Mmmm.’

Ru-ru. One. Two. Three. Ru-ru.

‘Nesting season,’ said Eddy, surfacing marginally. It would be the same one. Or two. In the big oak, two streets over. The owners cultivated the birds, left honeyed crumbs. But the bird calls belonged to the whole neighbourhood, they slipped through your open window on the night air.

‘Old Ruru,’ he said. It was a plaintive call, stabbing at you.

‘Ms Ruru.’

‘She’s on the eggs.’

‘Watchful guardian,’ said Boo.

Ru-ru.

Ru-ru.

He drifted off again.
